LANSING, Mich. (AP) Gov. Jennifer Granholm has vetoed 34 road projects put into this year’s supplemental budget by Republicans who control the state Legislature, a spokeswoman said.

Granholm has emphasized repairing existing roads rather than authorizing new road construction.

Republican legislative leaders approved the $357.4 million supplemental budget with the 34 projects Granholm had delayed in April to save money. They said the projects have been long-scheduled and money has been appropriated to complete them.

The supplemental budget is for the fiscal year that ends Sept. 30.

The road projects in the supplemental budget represent about $175 million in work. They include proposed freeway interchange construction in the Detroit area and roadwork in the Grand Rapids, Saginaw Bay and northern Lower Michigan areas.

In the governor’s veto message, she said she would work with lawmakers on identifying important road projects, Granholm spokeswoman Liz Boyd said.

There still is hope the projects could be funded in the fiscal year that begins Oct. 1.

A state House subcommittee is considering next year’s budget for the state Department of Transportation, which lawmakers could amend to include some of the delayed projects.
