Contractors in the central Indiana are seeing a lot of a familiar face at a brand new equipment rental business based in Indianapolis.

Throughout her 21 years in the business, Grimes steadily rose through the ranks to become an office manager and outside sales representative.

Last year, Grimes decided that the next logical step was to run her own business and with the help of Robert Boyd, started up H.E.R. LLC (Heavy Equipment Rental), located just off I-465 at 2415 W. Thompson Road in Indianapolis, Ind. The name H.E.R. was suggested to incorporate the idea of being a woman in the construction industry.

Grimes said she felt it had a nice ring to it while explaining exactly what they do. The company is currently going through the certification process to become a certified WBE (Woman Business Enterprise) with the city of Indianapolis, and the state of Indiana.

“The reason I started my own company was because of my customers,” Grimes said. “I want them to know that they are very important and the driving force for the way this company will operate. Without them there would be no H.E.R.

“Give the customer a good machine at competitive rates and treat them like you want to be treated is how we build relationships. If you cater to your customers needs they will recommend your company to others in the future.”

Currently, the company has four full time employees that includes Grimes as president, Robert Boyd as operations manager, Grimes’ son Dustin as an outside sales representative and Mike Wicker as mechanic.

Grimes explained that, as the name states, they concentrate on the big machines stocking no small tools or residential equipment. The company’s inventory includes light towers, skid steer loaders, backhoes, compactors, excavators, compact excavators, wheel loaders, telehandlers and D3 to D8 size dozers and can be rented by the day, week, month or even by the year.

The company celebrated its one-year anniversary on June 25, 2007, with an open house and invited clients to come tour the facilities, which has several service bays and space for stocked parts with a 5-acre lot behind the building. Grimes said she hopes to keep the lot empty throughout the construction season.

Grimes indicated H.E.R. plans to make the new Web site a tool where customers can go to find equipment to rent or buy as well as a Dirt Board page that will match customers up who are looking to get rid of excess dirt with those who need dirt on various jobsites.

H.E.R. also has a service department that not only services its own equipment, but can service or repair customers equipment either in H.E.R’s shop or on a jobsite.
