On Sept. 8 and 9, co-workers at the Lancaster facilities of High Steel Structures Inc. celebrated the recent registration of the company’s quality management system to the newest ISO 9001:2000 standards.

“What does ISO 9001: 2000 mean to our customers?

“As an international standard it clearly shows that our quality, processes and procedures are ’world class,’” noted Pat Loftus, company president. “Our customers can count on High Steel to produce, ship and erect bridge superstructures that satisfy their requirements. Whether it is a simple highway overpass or a signature design/build structure like the large cable-stayed bridge over the Cooper River in Charleston, SC, our customers can be sure we will fully support their needs.”

The registration caps a series of assessments by The Quality Management Institute (QMI), North America’s largest management systems registrar. Final audit procedures were completed during the second quarter. High Steel Structures Inc. is the largest bridge steel fabricator in the United States to achieve ISO 9001:2000 registration of its quality management system.

“This certification process has helped us develop new tools for continuous improvement,” stated Russ Panico, director-quality. “Its positive effects on documentation, the corrective action system, metrology, training, and vendor quality are already apparent. Conforming to the ISO standard enables greater product consistency, which will enhance value for our customers.”

According to Panico, High Steel is currently in the review process for adding ISO 9001:2000 registration to the credentials of its Williamsport, PA, facility. The review is scheduled for completion in the first quarter of 2004.

ISO standards are governed by the International Organization for Standardization, a worldwide federation of national standards bodies of some 146 countries.

ISO works with member countries to develop standards to improve the design, performance, and safety of manufactured goods and services. ISO 9001:2000 specifies requirements for a quality management system that is effective in meeting customer requirements. Less than 1 percent of companies in the United States are registered or certified to ISO 9001:2000.
