High-Volume Trommel Re-Engineered for Fast Drum Changes

Designed for high volume pre-screening and specialty composting operations, the largest portable trommel in the line of screening equipment from McCloskey International has been extensively re-engineered to utilize the company’s Drum X-Change System.

By replacing the trommel’s chain drive with the Drum X-Change System’s wheel drive, the new 4x4 733 Trommel eliminates costly service requirements from the equipment while achieving significant improvements in the productivity and flexibility of the trommel.

“In our smaller trommels, the Drum X-Change System has proven to be one of our most successful innovations for the screening industry,” said Paschal McCloskey, founder and president of the company.

“We have been hearing more and more requests recently, from both dealers and customers, to offer the same kind of flexibility and simplicity in a machine capable of higher production levels. With the new model 733 Trommel, our engineering team has answered the call, and also taken full advantage of the opportunity to expand on its features for higher throughput and lower maintenance costs.”

The Drum X-Change System, as originally developed by McCloskey, utilizes a wheel-drive in place of traditional chain drives. This allows very quick changes of the screening drum. Instead of taking the trommel out of service for days at a time to change drums, the Drum X-Change System allows operators to simply lift out one drum and drop in another. One or two operators working with a wheel loader or excavator are able to complete the switch in just an hour or two, often less. As a result, changing screens to suit different applications and products becomes a far more practical, and much less costly, undertaking.

According to Andy Krol, chief engineer on the McCloskey Trommel line, versatility is just one advantage of bringing the Drum X-Change System to the 733 model.

“By eliminating the chain drive, we also eliminate the No. 1 maintenance item on the machine. In the long run, you actually get the added flexibility and productivity of the quick-change feature at a lower cost than the old chain-driven trommels.”

Krol said that the modifications required to implement the Drum X-Change System opened the door for further design enhancements.

“With the chain drive out of the way, we were able to relocate the engine compartment and the diesel tank down to ground level. In previous machines of this size, the engine was mounted more than 9 feet above the ground. Technicians needed to climb a ladder to perform basic service such as checking the oil and changing filters. Simply moving the engine lower provides a valuable improvement in service times and safety.

“We also upsized the fuel tank to 400 gallons, “Krol continued, “which, because of the drive’s efficiency, means the trommel can run up to 40 continuous operating hours without refueling.”

Powered by a Tier III compliant, 205 hp (153 kW) Caterpillar C6.6 ACERT diesel engine, the 4x4 733 Trommel has the most powerful wheel-drive system in the industry for portable trommels, according to the manufacturer. Krol said that Tier III compliance will become more important to screening businesses as more jurisdictions follow the lead of Florida and California in setting environmental standards.

A “Dual-Flow” drum drive circuit provides two pumps working in tandem to drive rotation of the drum. The redesigned drive hydraulics include a larger oil reservoir plus high flow, high torque hydraulic motors coupled to custom made drive wheels weighing in excess of 200 lbs. (91 kg) each.

With its reconfigured engine compartment and fuel tank, the new 733 found room to accommodate a larger hopper than any previous models. This, along with the “Dual-Flow” drive, enables further increases in throughput and production efficiency, according to the manufacturer.
