Hitachi’s ZX290LC-5 and the ZX870LC-5 represent the first two waves of Dash-5 excavators to roll out in 2011. The ZX250LC-5, ZX290LC-5, and ZX350LC-5 will be the first to arrive at dealers. The ZX470LC-5, ZX670LC-5, and ZX850LC-5 will launch later this summer. Other utility- and construction-sized models, including wheeled and ultrashorts as well as compacts, will roll out at a later date.

The Dash-5 Difference

Due to optimized hydraulics, the Dash-5 series excavators have improved arm digging force, bucket digging force, lift capacity, swing speed, swing torque, hydraulic flow, engine horsepower and drawbar pull (varies by model).

The roomier cab has more side-to-side foot room and a larger door with more glass for better visibility to the side. The new, more comfortable high-back seat is available as a heated, air-suspension version (optional on the ZX250–ZX350, standard on the ZX470 and higher). The new multifunction monitor provides enhanced diagnostic features and integrates the radio and HVAC controls in one place. Should the excavator be equipped with a rearview camera (optional on the ZX250–ZX350, standard on the ZX470 and higher), its image also is displayed on the monitor.

On the ZX250–ZX350 models, the rear hood is low for better visibility to the rear, and there is a new mirror on the counterweight. There also is an updated light package with two cab lights and one additional boom light (optional or standard, depending on the model). A hydraulically driven reversible fan for cleaning debris from the radiator screen comes standard on the ZX470 and higher models.

When it comes to durability, there are improvements, too. The ZX250–ZX350 Dash-5s have an extended frame housing the updated cooling components and Interim Tier IV (IT4) engine. On the ZX290 and ZX350, undercarriages have been updated with roller improvements.

The IT4 Isuzu cooled EGR engine platform is less complex to maintain than selective catalytic reduction systems while delivering the productivity, fuel efficiency, and reliability customers have enjoyed with Tier III models, according to the manufacturer.

A new exhaust filter consists of a diesel oxidation catalyst/diesel particulate filter. It requires no daily attention due to its 5,000-hour service life.

Features that have been retained from the Dash-3 Series include the boom, arm, and track options, and the hydraulics and electrical components.
