Marking its 30th year as a major heavy equipment exporter, Hoffman International Inc. completed its second major project in Africa for the year 2000. “This significant project represented a typical turnkey project for us in which we selected specific new and used equipment based on the client’s requirements and, thereafter, arranged long-term financing and handled all of the logistic requirements for coordinating the delivery of the equipment to the ultimate destination to the client’s yard in Ghana,” said Joseph F. Watters, president, Hoffman International. “In addition to transport and documentation, we also provided all of the spare parts support and technical on-site assistance to the client.”

The Project

The $1.5-million equipment package was arranged for A. Kannin Ltd., a major road building and contracting firm located in Kumasi, one of Ghana’s major cities. Included in the package were two new Mack tractors with dumps; recent vintage road building equipment comprised of tractor bulldozers, wheel loaders, excavators, graders, and compactors; and back up spare parts. The export specialists at Hoffman International Inc. drew upon their considerable experience to locate, evaluate and select the needed equipment from various sources. Company personnel then inspected and serviced the equipment and arranged the delivery and shipping from two U. S. ports.

Shipping logistics included loading some of the equipment on a ship at Portsmouth, VA, and the remainder on the same ship at the Port of New York. The ship then sailed on to the Port of Tema, Ghana, according to Watters. This was done twice with the second shipment including a container of spare parts.

Part of the complete turnkey service that Hoffman International clients appreciate, reported the company, is the firm’s policy of sending a technical representative to job sites around the world. On this project, a Hoffman tech rep will spend more than two weeks on site to coordinate delivery and commissioning of the equipment together with maintenance, and the training of A. Kannin operators and service personnel.

Business Generated New Business

“The principals of A. Kannin are very friendly with the management of a Kumasi timber company for whom we delivered a similar turnkey package of $1.3-million of timber equipment earlier this year,” Watters said. “Kannin’s close observation of our success and total customer satisfaction on that project played a large part in our securing the Kannin order.”

Hoffman International distributes the products of 23 machinery manufacturers overseas. The equipment includes machines used for construction, lifting and road building.
