The nationally syndicated Today Show and Forbestraveler.com designated Highway 1, the Pacific Coast Highway, as one of the Top 10 Classic Coastal Drives in the world.

On the morning of Aug. 16, the MSNBC Today Show featured the drive along Highway 1 as it traverses through the Central Coast, pointing out the spectacular views of coastline and interior agricultural areas.

According to Caltrans Deputy District Director Jackie Parker, “Caltrans is so pleased that Highway 1 was selected for national and international recognition. We work hard to maintain and improve this route through very challenging terrain.”

Highway 1 provides the traveler with beautiful views and access to untouched wilderness. It also attracts visitors who in turn support the local tourism economy.

The central coast Caltrans District includes 265 mi. (426 km) of Highway 1. Caltrans crews work to keep Highway 1 open year round, especially in areas where landslides occur, specifically, south of Lompoc in Santa Barbara County and south of Big Sur in Monterey County.
