Hyundai Construction Equipment Americas Inc. has added three new mid-size excavator models — the R140LC-9A, R160LC-9A and the R180LC-9A, — to its 9A series product line. These machines will provide operators with enhanced features and benefits compared to prior models including a certified Tier IV Interim engine upgrade, improved hydraulics, increased operator comfort and added durability, according to the manufacturer.

The R140/160/180LC-9A models are ideal for excavating projects, road and utility work and demolition.

The R140LC-9A, R160LC-9A and R180LC-9A have operating weights of 30,820 lbs. (13,980 kg), 39,240 lbs. (17,800 kg) and 41,560 lbs. (18,850 kg) respectively.

Hyundai has powered each of these 9A excavators with Tier IV Interim, turbo-charged Perkins 1204E engines providing maximum power, reliability optimum fuel economy and reduced emissions. Electronically controlled fuel injection and self-diagnostic capabilities add to the engines’ efficiency and serviceability. The 1204E engines have fully automatic regeneration control strategies and service-free diesel particulate filters, making operation seamless for the user. The cooling systems provide optimum efficiency in all operations, ensuring longer life of the engine and hydraulic components.

To further conserve fuel and reduce environmental impact, operators can choose between three engine modes — power, standard and economy — which enable the machine to switch between full power mode and two reduced fuel consumption modes according to the user’s preference or machine application.

To achieve optimum control, Hyundai designed the hydraulic system on each of these models to provide the operator with excellent response and improved controllability. Maximizing pump flow controls minimizes fuel consumption and improved spool valves are engineered to provide precision control to each hydraulic function with minimal effort. Improved hydraulic control valves, precision engineered variable volume piston pumps, fine-touch pilot controls and enhanced travel functions make for smooth and easy operation. Boom-down flow regeneration and control valve technology also are improved. An auto boom-swing priority feature automatically and continuously looks for the ideal hydraulic flow balance for the boom and swing functions of the machine to maximize performance and productivity.

Hyundai has improved the structure strength of the 9A series cabs with stronger, slimmer tubing for optimum safety. Low stress, high strength steel forms a more durable upper and lower frame. Structural integrity of these three models was tested by way of FEM (finite elements method) analysis and long term durability tests. An optional ROPS (Roll over protective structure) cab can be equipped to further enhance operator safety.

The enlarged cabs on the R140/160/180LC-9A models provide increased visibility. The newly designed cabs allow for more space, enhanced operator comfort and a wider field view. Special attention was given to a clear, open and comfortable interior with plenty of visibility of the machine surroundings and the job at hand. This well-balanced combination of precision aspects puts the operator in the perfect position to work safely and productively. According to the manufacturer.

In addition to enhanced safety and visibility, operators will enjoy being able to fully adjust the cab seating of the R140/160/180LC-9A excavators to best fit their needs. Operators can easily adjust the seat, console and armrest settings to the desired comfort level. Hyundai has integrated the seat with the console to reduce operator fatigue and adjustable air suspension comes standard. New joystick consoles are adjustable in height by pushing a single button.

Hyundai’s engineers made sure that the 9A cabs include many amenities that decrease stress and increase comfort and productivity. Some of these features include heated seats, additional space, enhanced climate control system for optimum air temperature, an advanced audio system with USB player, AM/FM stereo, and MP3 capabilities. A smart key system also is available, which allows the operator to start the machine with the push of a button.

The R140/160/180LC-9A excavators come standard with a newly designed 7 in., touch screen, color LCD display monitor with easy to read digital gauges for monitoring temperature, fuel level and other maintenance items. The simplified design allows the operator to easily adjust engine power and work modes, set boom speed and arm regeneration, view what’s happening behind them with the standard rear-view camera, and disable the machine with the new password anti-theft system.

Maintenance on the R140/160/180LC-9A excavators is easy with ground-line access to filters, lube fittings, fuses and machine electronic components and with wide open compartments. This model and the entire 9A excavator series feature bushings designed for extended lube intervals of 250 hours and wear resistant, noise reducing polymer shims. Also provided are extended-life hydraulic filters (1,000 hours), long-life hydraulic oil (5,000 hours), more efficient cooling systems and integrated engine preheating systems, all of which help to extend service intervals thus reducing operating costs and machine down time.

Additionally, the R140/160/180LC-9A models feature Hyundai’s Hi-mate remote management system, which allows owners and dealer service personnel to access a machine’s vital service and diagnostic information from anywhere with internet access. Hi-mate users can remotely monitor daily reports outlining a machine’s location, working hours, fuel consumption and any periodic maintenance needed, drastically reducing downtime and saving the owner time and money.
