Komatsu America Corp.’s WB156-5 and the WB156PS-5 are equipped with Tier II engines and feature operating weights between 16,530 and 18,780 lbs. (7,500 and 8,518 kg) and loader bucket options up to 1.5 cu. yd. (1.1 cu m). These models, in the 15-ft. (4.5 m) backhoe class are the big brothers of the WB146-5 and WB146PS-5.
The backhoe loaders feature a spacious operator station that has been completely redesigned to provide maximum comfort for any size operator. They are available in either open ROPS canopy or enclosed dual entry cab which allows for easy access from either side of the machine.
The climate-controlled cab has 10 vents for maximum air circulation and its curved shape and large windows provide the operator with 360-degree visibility. A one piece, floor-to-ceiling rear-opening window provides increased backhoe visibility.
The machine accommodates operators of all sizes with its multiple suspension seat adjustments and a tilt steering column that locks at any desired angle. The standard backhoe Pressure Proportional Control (PPC) joysticks and adjustable control towers with integrated wrist rests allow the operator to achieve maximum comfort and control.
The WB156-5 gets its power and fuel economy from a turbocharged Komatsu engine with 95 net hp (71 kW). Komatsu’s HydrauMind load sensing closed-center hydraulic system provides for high flow, precise control, high breakout forces and increased fuel economy.
The standard backhoe control pattern change valve allows the operator to choose either a backhoe style or an excavator style control pattern. Because the operator is working with a familiar control pattern he can be more productive, precise and safe, according to the manufacturer.
The drivetrain includes a 4-speed synchro-shuttle transmission with standard four-wheel drive and high flotation tires for greater traction in soft soil applications. The WB156PS-5 includes a full PowerShift transmission with built-in twist grip gear control, auto-shift and kick-down functions.
A heavy-duty one-piece welded mainframe ensures the WB156-5 is stable and durable. The new “S” shaped backhoe boom is narrower and stronger for visibility, increased boom lift capacity, enhanced truck loading and excellent breakout force. A telescopic dipper arm allows the operator to reach 23 ft. 6 in. (7 m) at ground level. The large pins and bushings, reversible stabilizer pads and heavy gauge backhoe swing frame combine for enhanced performance and longevity.
The dual direction parallel lift linkage loader keeps the load level throughout the lifting and lowering cycles for safe and productive work flow. With the optional hydraulic attachment coupler, the operator can add forks for tool carrier operations. The slim loader arms further enhance operator visibility and allow for easier truck loading, while the heavy-duty cast iron nose guard provides protection for the machine and acts as an integral counterweight. The loader control also is a pilot operated joystick. The operator can simultaneously control all loader functions including a multi-purpose bucket when equipped with a single lever.
The lockable single piece tilt-forward engine hood lifts easily, exposing the entire engine compartment. All daily service checks are conveniently located on the left side of the engine. The ignition key opens all locks and compartments, while the lockable toolbox provides ample space for necessities and serves as a protective shield for the hydraulic filter and battery. The ground level fuel fill allows for safer and faster fill times and reduces spillage.
