The N.C. Department of Transportation Jan. 11 awarded a $59.5 million design-build contract to improve 6.6 mi. (10.6 km) of I-77 in Yadkin County to the Lane Construction Corp. of Meriden, Conn.

The contract involves replacing concrete on the highway as well as replacing guardrails and cable median barriers between U.S. 21 and Ashbury Church Road (State Road 1125) in Yadkin County. The work will not include additional travel lanes.

“This project is the first major rehabilitation along this section of I-77 since the interstate was constructed in the 1970s,” said Arnold Lakey of North Wilkesboro, who represents the region on the board. “I-77 carries a high volume of traffic and the rehabilitation of this stretch will greatly improve travel for motorists that use this important north-south route.”

The design-build method combines the design and construction of a project into one contract and allows the contractor to be innovative in their design and construction phasing, reducing overall completion time. In addition, the design-build method will allow the contractor greater flexibility in determining how to manage traffic through the construction period, thereby minimizing inconvenience to motorists.

Work may begin as early as February with completion set for June 2009. The northbound rest area located in the project corridor will remain open throughout construction.
