Link-Belt RTC-8090 Series II Features New Boom Design

Link-Belt’s RTC-8090 Series II, 90-ton (80 t) rough terrain crane features a new boom design and increased lift capacities.

The RTC-8090 Series II features Link-Belt’s locking and latching system for the 38 to 140-ft. (11.6 to 42.7 m), five-section boom — a first for an RT crane. This boom design uses a single hydraulic cylinder to move all five boom sections one at a time. And, unlike other cranes with latching booms, there is no deduct in the lift chart for telescoping a load.

To make maintenance easier, the design incorporates Teflon wear pucks impregnated in the wear pad surfaces so the boom requires no grease whatsoever. The single cylinder design allows huge lift capacities while yielding a light working weight.

The boom, combined with removable, modular counterweights, helps reduce the transport weight to less than 90,000 lbs. (40,823.3 kg).

The 8090 has a maximum tip height of 238 ft. (72.6 m) with the additional two 16-ft. (4.9 m) lattice inserts installed between the boom head and the optional 35 to 58-ft. (10.7 to 17.7 m) bi-folding lattice. All attachment combinations have offset positions of 2, 15, 30, and 45 degrees.

The galvaneal cab, with curved front window glass, increases visibility at high boom angles. For optimum operator productivity and comfort, the 6-way adjustable seat matches up to the controls. Lift-up armrests and a wide sliding door allow easy access. All gauges and switches are in the operator’s forward line of sight and backlit for low-light operation. The optional air conditioner integrates into the heating and ventilation system, which has directional vents in the front of the cab.

Powering the RTC-8090 Series II is the 225-hp (167.8 kW) Caterpillar C6.6 engine. A direct-mount Spicer powershift transmission brings the power to the wheels. It has six forward and six reverse speeds. A switch in the operator’s cab controls the four steering modes: two-wheel front, two-wheel rear, four-wheel, and crab.

The RTC-8090 uses an automotive style, 4-link suspension. The fully independent rear suspension reduces bouncing and improves handling both on and off the road. For an even better ride, Link-Belt’s Hydro-gas Ride suspension is available as an option. This system’s charged accumulator serves as a shock absorber improving carrier stability. At higher road speeds, Hydro-gas Ride provides a level of comfort and handling unmatched by other rough terrain cranes, according to the manufacturer.

The winches deliver 16,880 lbs. (7,656.6 kg) of line pull and 341 ft. (104 m) per minute of line speed. Spooled onto the winch drum is a durable 0.75-in (1.9 cm) diameter four strand, low torque wire rope. Rotation resistant rope is available as an option.
