The Maryland Department of Transportation's State Highway Administration (SHA) is resurfacing two major highways on the lower eastern shore. Work is under way on westbound U.S. 50 (Ocean Gateway) between White Richardson Road and Walston Switch Road just east of Salisbury in Wicomico County.

Crews are milling, resurfacing and restriping this 6-mi. (9.65 km) section, working 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday to complete the project by mid-April. Up to 28,000 vehicles travel this stretch of U.S. 50 each day on average, with significantly higher volumes during the summer beach season.

Once the U.S. 50 work is complete, SHA will move to U.S. 113 (Worcester Highway) in Worcester County, where 5.3 mi. (8.5 km) will be resurfaced in both directions between MD 90 (Ocean City Expressway) and the Delaware state line. More than 14,000 vehicles travel this stretch of U.S. 113 each day.

SHA awarded contracts to Allan Myers of Fallston for both projects. The U.S. 50 contract is valued at $1.9 million; the U.S. 113 work is valued at $3.8 million (estimated) and is being performed under a $10.3 million, multi-location area wide contract.

SHA is also paving 4.7 mi. (7.56 km) of MD 528 (Coastal Highway) from MD 90 to the Delaware line in Ocean City. This work began in mid-March and will be completed by Memorial Day.

SHA scheduled these locations early in the paving season to minimize public impacts — all three major resurfacing projects are time-sensitive due to increased summer traffic volumes. Crews may work extended hours and weekends as permitted to complete the work.
