Local Orlando news affiliate News13 is reporting that over the next year and a half, I-4 Ultimate construction is going to be ramping up, which means FDOT is now ready to hire hundreds of construction workers.

“We couldn't build the project without these skilled crafts people that we are hiring and putting to work.” said SGL Assistant Project Director Bill Reed.

The groundwork for the I-4 Ultimate project is nearly finished. Now, all they need are about 1,500 more construction workers ready to get the job done.

“It's four years' worth of work that can help you build a career in construction,” said Reed.

Recently, the Florida Department of Transportation, working with SGL construction, created a new training center off West Robinson Street in Orlando. The hope is the training center will best educate the new hires about the construction equipment they will eventually be using out in the field.

“I would much rather someone come in here and roll this than come out in the field and roll a real excavator,” said one of the trainers.

Despite their need to hire so many over the next year, we are told safety is a top priority. Since the project began 15 months ago, there have been a number of accidents, including one where a construction worker died.

“Safety is a number one priority, not only for the workers, but also for someone that may be visiting the worksite and those that may be driving through the project,” said FDOT's Loreen Bobo.

Currently, FDOT is looking for skilled labors to fill various numerous positions, including carpenters, equipment and crane operators, pile drivers, concrete finishers, pipe layers and more.

Anyone interested in applying can visit their Orlando location at 409 West Robinson Street in Orlando. Applications will be taken every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 8:00 a.m. - 12 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
