MAGGIE VALLEY, N.C. (AP) - The mayor of Maggie Valley has died in a construction accident.

Police told local media outlets that Ron DeSimone died Friday afternoon when heavy building materials fell from a roof above him.

Police Chief Scott Sutton said the death has been ruled an accident.

Sutton said DeSimone is survived by a wife and two daughters.

DeSimone became mayor of the Haywood County town in 2011. Town clerk Vickie Best says the mayor had planned to run for re-election this year.

Best said the general contractor was working to build tourism and economic development in the area.
