McCloskey International has introduced a new mid-range production trommel that combines a dramatic reduction in transport size with upsized feed and conveyor components for increased throughput.
The wheeled 516 REP model (equipped with radial stacker, end conveyor and pintle hitch) offers a high production rate and is designed to be pulled behind any heavy-duty truck or loading equipment normally found in construction and aggregate fleets.
The 516 REP uses new fabrication techniques developed by McCloskey last year for the manufacture of its compact 412 R, resulting in a compact construction that reduces its overall transport length by a third.
The 412 R, also a wheeled, pintle-towed trommel, was the first McCloskey machine to make extensive use of folded steel plate in the chassis, in place of a traditional welded construction. Using folded plates gives the design engineers greater structural strength and more flexibility for their internal configuration of the trommel.
Despite its compact travel size, the new trommel features a 6-cu.-yd. (4.6-cu.-m) feed hopper, 50 percent larger than previous models, plus wider conveyor belts to match. The feed belt and stacker belts have both been upsized from 30 to 36 in. (76 to 91 cm) width, while the new oversize belt weighs in at 42 in. (107 cm) wide.
The 516 retains the same 5 by 16 ft. (1.5 by 4.8 m) drum screen used by its predecessors.
As the company’s President and Founder Pascal McCloskey pointed out, “reducing the overall transport length by as much as nine feet is a significant achievement for our engineering team, when you account for the fact that the length of the drum itself is unchanged. All the reductions in length and component spacing had to be concentrated at the other end of the trommel.”
McCloskey said that pintle towing was a key design objective for the new 516.
“We have always given special attention to the needs of the smaller operators, not just municipal screening sites and the very large aggregate producers. These customers have to be competitive with equipment that is highly mobile and compatible with commonly available power units, such as dump trucks. The pintle hitch is the fastest, easiest way for a custom screener to pick up and go wherever the work is. Our challenge is to deliver the maximum possible production capacity for that kind of operation.”
This commitment to smaller and mid-range producers is reflected in McCloskey’s announcement of several new ultra-compact trommels in the past year. New 407, 412, 512 and 516 models have all achieved significant improvements in transportability while maintaining or increasing productivity within their nominal size range, according to the manufacturer.
The 516 REP travels on a new tandem undercarriage specifically designed to minimize weight on the pintle hitch. With dual tires on each corner and front leaf springs, the tandem spacing is optimized to carry 90 percent of the machine’s wheels, and less than 2,500 lbs. (1,134 kg) on the hitch. The undercarriage is equipped with air brakes as standard, with an option for electric brakes.
With an overall height 2 ft. (.6 m) taller than the McCloskey 512 model, the 516 is equipped with ground adjustable brushes for safer servicing of the trommel. Connecting shafts that run from the brushes on the trommel drum down to ground level enable operators to adjust them for wear without having to climb up on the machine.
The 516 has its control panel located at the rear of the machine, safely away from the loading area. Access covers on service areas protect operators from moving parts while keeping components within easy reach for technicians.
The 516 REP is offered with an optional tipping grid for scalping off reject material in heavy-duty applications. The grid also can be tipped out of the way to provide a clear path into the hopper when screening finer material.
