Merit Shop Training, Research Center Awards Scholarships

Ten individuals were awarded scholarships from the Merit Shop Training and Research Center (MSTRC) during the July ABC Keystone board of directors meeting. The $18,000 awarded brings in total $371,000 that has been awarded by MSTRC since its inception to help students entering a career path in the construction industry.

This year’s recipients are as follows, along with their hometowns and courses of study:

• Stephanie Hoffmeire, Paradise, Pa. —$500 award, Architecture at Marywood University

• Eric Munro, Columbia, Pa. — $500 award, construction management at Philadelphia University

• Lee Summers, New Providence, Pa. — $500 award, building construction technology at HACC

• Austin Achenbach, Lebanon, Pa. — $2,000 award, structural design and construction engineering at PSU, Harrisburg

• Branden Harting, Stevens, Pa. — $2,000 award, carpentry at Stevens College of Technology

• Cody Sollenberger, Lancaster, Pa. — $2,000 award, building science and sustainable design at Penn. College of Technology

• Courtney Horst, Lebanon, Pa. — $2,500 award, architecture at Virginia Tech.

• Devin Taylor, Red Lion, Pa. — $2,500 award, structural design and construction engineering at PSU, Harrisburg

• Caleb Wise, Manheim, Pa. — $2,500 award, building automation technology at Penn. College of Technology

• Ross Seilhammer, Duncannon, Pa. — The Richard M. Honabach Memorial Scholarship, which is dedicated to the memory of the chapter’s past executive director, $3,000. Seilhammer is studying electrical engineering at PSU, Harrisburg.

The Merit Shop Training and Research Center was established a number of years ago as a charitable 501(c)3, educational and research foundation, by ABC Keystone, for the purpose of assisting students who have chosen construction-related career paths.

The center is funded by members of the chapter, who have taken upon themselves the responsibility to be proactive in assisting men and women in their preparation for this industry.

ABC Keystone, operating out of Rapho Business Park, Manheim, represents more than 650 construction-related firms locally and is part of a national association with 74 chapters representing more than 22,000 merit shop construction and construction-related firms nationwide. ABC Keystone members are involved in commercial, industrial, and institutional free enterprise construction throughout south central Pennsylvania.
