John Carlo Inc. (JCI), among Michigan’s leading road paving and construction companies, has been honored with an industry award for its recent reconstruction work on the Gerald R. Ford International Airport runway 8R/26L in Grand Rapids, MI. The $28-million reconstruction project allows the airport to safely and efficiently serve its approximately two-million annual passengers.
The Michigan Concrete Paving Association (MCPA) has recognized JCI with a “National Award Program for Excellence in Concrete Pavement Award” in the Category of Airports and for its work for the Gerald R. Ford International Airport. Sponsored by the ACPA and Concrete Pavement magazine, the annual award recognizes contractors, engineers and owners who completed outstanding projects in 2001.
Among JCI’s project innovations and accomplishments, noted by the MCPA:
• A total of 761,810 sq. yds. (636,970 sq m) of cement treated base and concrete pavement were used.
• Despite constant wet weather, the project was completed within eight months with an active runway operating in the middle of the project.
• During one extended production shift crews placed 8,050 cu. yds. (6,155 cu m) of concrete.
• Ride quality tolerances average 2 in. (5 cm) per mile, whereas FAA regulations are 7 in. (17.8 cm) per mile.
Of particular note during the project was the reuse of existing cement treated base (CTB). John Carlo Inc. utilized more than 100,000 cu. yds. (76,455 cu m) of CTB for the runway work; a unique and innovative means by which to increase efficiencies and overall stability. One of the most successful aspects of the project was the superior construction of longitudinal joints. By paving at 37.5 ft. (11.4 m), JCI was able to eliminate deviation between section joints, and far exceed FAA construction standards.
Also vital to the project success were John Carlo Inc. team members Ralph Bush, batch plant operator; Rich Jozwiak, paving mechanic; Don Jozwiak, grade foreman; and Tom Benacquisto, paving superintendent.
No stranger to work in the Grand Rapids area, JCI utilized a number of top subcontractors from the region, including EarthTech, All State Electric, L.J. Construction and Prein & Newhof. Previously, JCI managed several other projects at the Gerald R. Ford International Airport, and supervised the paving of U.S. 31 in Muskegon. This summer, JCI will complete a paving project at the Battle Creek Air National Base.
“We are quite proud to have our work recognized as among the best,” said Steve Gregor, manager-Concrete Division, John Carlo Inc. “This award is a testament to the dedication and teamwork of everyone involved, from our employees to our construction partners, The Gerald R. Ford Airport Authority & Prein & Newhof.”
