Telecommunications company Sprint Communications is currently at work upgrading its network in the midwest as part of its Net Vision project.

A 2012 Manitex 50155S 50 ton (45 t) crane on a 2012 Freightliner 114 M2-112 Victor truck platform played its part in a tower upgrade for Sprint at Our Lady of Victory Church in Minneapolis, Minn.

The two day job, which began on June 13, was handled by wireless construction contractor Mill City TEC Inc. The Minneapolis, Minn., based company has undertaken work for Sprint before, as well as completing multiple similar contracts across the midwest for other communications companies such as Verizon, ATT and T-mobile.

Kathryn Wiley, media director at Mill City TEC, said “This particular crane was chosen for the Minneapolis job because the 200 feet reach and versatility of this crane meets our needs as a growing company. The crane helped us perform the job on time, and within budget.”

Mill City TEC’s crew used the crane with a basket to change out antennas and lift personell and supplies as needed.

With three locations — St Paul, Minn., Fargo, N.D., and Kansas City, Kansas — the supplier, Truck Utilities Inc., headquartered in St. Paul, Minn., has been serving the midwest since 1963. Mill City TEC is leasing the crane from them with an option to buy.

The versatility and popularity of this Manitex crane was confirmed by Terry Hoops, regional sales representative of Truck Utilities.

“The three main reasons the Manitex 50155 is so popular with contractors are, one, it has a main boom that has a tip height of 165 feet and can reach over 200 feet with the jib, two, it can make a seven ton road, giving it the best road ability in the industry, and, three, it has a two man rotating basket that has a 1,200 pound capacity all the way to 209 feet. This is another industry best,” he said.
