Construction Equipment Guide

The Morbark Model 1600, capable of grinding up to 10-ft. (3 m) stumps at high production rates, has joined the tub grinder industry.

The hammermill — approximately 6 ft. (1.8 m) in length — was designed to support this tub’s production rate and operating efficiency. Production capabilities are limited only by the equipment needed to feed the tub.

This machine can grind the largest diameter material in the industry because it has the largest base in the industry, according to the manufacturer.

The base diameter measures 11 ft. 2 in. (3.4 m) with a tub capacity of 20 cu. yds. (15.2 cu m). With a standard 22-hammer pattern, offering more space between hammers, the 1600 quickly grinds landfill material, mixed debris and large, chunky wood. It can easily be fed using a 13-yd. bucket. Because of the high production rate, the discharge system is beefed up to match, including a belt that measures 60 in. (152 cm) wide. For regrind applications it can be changed to a 30-hammer pattern in only an hour.

The 1600’s standard three-auger system eliminates damage from steel contamination and provides for a pressure sensor, which will stop the tub if the augers become overloaded.

The Iqan system, standard on the 1600, also boosts production by minimizing downtime. The Iqan system, allows the operator to quickly adjust feed systems from the control panel to obtain maximum production rates while keeping engine load constant and fuel consumption to a minimum.

By utilizing the optional satellite modem — a wireless link between the factory and the machine — a factory service technician can dial up the modem and access functions on the grinder, diagnosing problems from his computer in Winn, MI.

Five replaceable wear plates, covering 360-degrees of the tub floor, are easily unbolted, removed and replaced when worn. In addition, the oil, air and fuel filters are quickly accessible for routine maintenance. The machine also is equipped with a power pack auxiliary pump, which can power the hydraulic rod pusher, tub fold, conveyor fold and stabilizer without starting the engine. Access into the radiator screen through an access door is another important benefit.

Suited for storm recovery and large volume mulch and biomass fuel producers, this machine has an extreme appetite for wood waste of large proportions.
