Morbark Inc.’s new horizontal grinder, the Model 3800 Wood Hog is aimed at mid-range wood and green waste recycling applications. The new Model 3800 is a versatile, compact unit that can benefit a variety of recycling operations, according to the manufacturer.

A large 38 by 59.75 in. (96.5 by 151.7 cm) infeed opening provides material flow into the mill chamber along with a generous rotor tip swing. A step-frame design creates plenty of space under and within the mill area allowing processed material to exit the grinding chamber freely.

Equipped with internal hydraulic drive on the feed wheel, as well as a 6 tooth drive sprocket on the bed chain, torque is increased to both the yoke and the infeed chain, eliminating wayward debris and congestion at the mill site, according to the manufacturer.

Complete with three sections of screen, the 3800 offers 3,539 sq. in. (22,832 sq cm) of screening area. A two-sided, bolt-on anvil is easily maintained and, if necessary, easy to replace.

Engine options include Caterpillar or Cummins diesel engines with power ranges from 400 to 630 hp (298 to 470 kW). Electric power also is available.

Drive train protection comes standard on the Model 3800 in the form of a PT Tech hydraulic wet clutch with internal torque limiting device. An optional twin disc clutch with full breakaway Brunel torque limiter also is offered.

Another standard feature is the Iqan system, a proportional feed and digital monitoring system. This system boosts production levels by providing a consistent feed to the grinding chamber. A simple programming tool allows the operator to adjust feed systems to obtain maximum protection while keeping the engine load constant.

The dual belt discharge system and lofty discharge conveyor add efficiency to the grinding operation. The 3800 weighs in at a little more than 53,000 lbs. (24,040 kg), making it road legal with no permits required for transport. A track model will be available in the near future.
