Employees at the Wilmington branch of Southern Industrial Constructors and Southern Crane worked one year, totaling 458,019 hours, without a single recordable accident — a noteworthy safety achievement.

Southern Industrial credits its exemplary safety record to rigorous standards, training and education. The company carries out frequent training for employees, constantly monitors and audits job sites and holds weekly safety meetings at each job site.

“We have excellent safety staff in Wilmington and throughout the company who are personally invested in our employees’ good health and welfare,” said Daniel P. Erwin, the corporate safety officer at Southern Industrial. “Safety is not just a slogan here.”

Erwin said Wilmington’s ability to work one year without a single recordable accident — defined as any injury requiring more than basic first aid — is “extremely rare” in the industry.

“As far as incident rates go, the industry average is at least three times higher than ours,” Erwin said. “But there’s always room for improvement. A safety program must live and breathe to succeed.”

Southern Industrial employees undergo extensive safety precautions before their work begins. A crew supervisor performs a safety task assignment before each work period and discusses every task in detail. A safety task list is outlined, signed and documented. Erwin said this ensures that employees understand expectations, which lowers the risk of potentially dangerous surprises.

After more than 47 years of business, Southern Industrial Constructors and its subsidiary, Southern Crane, have made “Working Together Safely” the cornerstone of their operations. The companies serve as industry and community leaders, taking pride in providing their services with safety, integrity, quality workmanship and responsive customer care.

Founded in 1962, Southern Industrial provides a wide range of services throughout the southeast, including turnkey industrial construction, industrial electrical construction, turnkey plant installations and relocations, rigging, millwright and machinery moving services, process and utility piping, precision concrete construction, structural and specialty steel fabrication and erection and complete plant maintenance services.

All of Southern Crane’s operators are CCO certified.

Because of their exemplary safety records, Southern Industrial and Southern Crane both are recognized as STAR contractors by the N.C. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Division.
