The Pennsylvania State University (PSU) is using five Caterpillar skid steers this winter to help with snow removal around the University Park campus. Penn State is renting one Cat 228, two Cat 216s, and two Cat 226s from its local Cleveland Brothers branch in State College, PA.
Snow removal is a large project, especially outside the Nittany Lions’ newly renovated Beaver Stadium where one Cat 226 was stationed during a recent winter storm.
Kenton Dutrow, the physical plant supervisor of labor and equipment, is in charge of the fleet for snow removal. He said that he and his operators have been pleased with the performance of the Cat skid steer loaders.
“Those, who have adapted after six, eight or 10 hours of operation, have felt comfortable with them. Our people like the controls, and like the way they handle. Their feet, ankles, and lower legs don’t hurt, and they don’t tire across the shoulders,” Dutrow said.
A total of 12 work tool attachments including five buckets, five blades, and two brooms also have been rented from Cleveland Brothers. The use of attachments enabled a Cat skid steer to be used for a small construction project that involved replacement of a water line.
Cleveland Brothers is central Pennsylvania’s full-service distributor of Caterpillar equipment and engines. Additionally, Cleveland Brothers is the distributor for JLG personnel lifts, Rosco road maintenance equipment, Mauldin paving equipment, Nordberg crushing and screening equipment, NPK hammers, Topcon guidance systems, and Trail King trailers. Fourteen facilities are located throughout central Pennsylvania.
