ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) Rail and port projects across New York can apply for some of the more than $26 million in state funding for infrastructure improvements.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Feb. 21 that the funding will go toward preserving and enhancing rail and port facilities in major trade and passenger travel corridors across the state. The Democrat said the money also will improve safety at the facilities while also easing road congestion and boosting economic activity.

The funds from the state's Passenger and Freight Rail Assistance Program will be given to projects selected through a competitive process and rated based on such criteria as compatibility with other private and public investments.

Projects eligible for the funding include track and bridge rehabilitation; rail yard, terminal and siding construction, and wharf, dock and bulkhead construction.
