New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) Commissioner Joseph H. Boardman presented more than 70 NYSDOT employees with the department’s highest honor, the Commissioner’s Award for Excellence.

The award publicly honors those employees who have distinguished themselves through acts of valor, career excellence, program advancement or innovation, and individual accomplishment. It has been presented to distinguished NYSDOT employees since the early 1980s.

“It is a great honor to recognize those members of our NYSDOT family from around the state who have worked tirelessly to make our state’s transportation network the safest and most efficiently administered in the United States,” Boardman said. “Those gathered here have put the interests of the people of this state ahead of their own, time and time again. They truly represent NYSDOT, which places the interest of New York’s communities at the forefront, and which seeks to involve the public as much possible in the formulation of our transportation agenda.”

Among those honored include NYSDOT employees from New York City who worked tirelessly to assist in the recovery and clean-up efforts in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 attacks. The department also has honored employees for outstanding individual achievements such as improving inspection systems, streamlining operations, and working to ensure that transportation network safety remains the No. 1 department priority.

“Integrity, partnership, teamwork, customer service and people, these are the five values with which NYSDOT conducts its operations day in and day out,” Boardman said. “The men and women gathered today not only capture the values we at this department hold dear, they have gone above and beyond all expectations because they care about how the work they do affects our friends, our neighbors and our communities.”
