WASHINGTON (AP) Funding for three Ohio River bridges –– including $46 million for the Brent Spence Bridge connecting northern Kentucky and Cincinnati along Interstates 75 and 71 –– is part of the massive $286.4 billion highway and mass transit bill.

The 41-year-old Brent Spence bridge between northern Kentucky and Cincinnati is estimated to carry roughly 149,000 vehicles daily, although it was built to carry 80,000 vehicles a day.

The $46 million would go toward pre-construction costs for replacing the bridge, said Mike Reynard, a spokesman for Sen. Jim Bunning, R-KY. Kentucky would receive $34 million of the total, with the rest for Ohio.

Funding would be slated to last until fiscal 2009.

The six-year surface transportation bill, the product of two years of negotiations between Congress and the White House, would generate new federal money for every state working to expand and repair their roadways, bridges and rail systems.
