Construction Equipment Guide

Helping small businesses in western and central Massachusetts identify and eliminate construction safety hazards is the subject of a free forum to be held Jan. 16, 2003, at Westover Air Force Base in Chicopee, MA.

Hosted by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s Springfield area office, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Safety Consultation Program and the Safety Council of Western New England, the forum will be held from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the base hangar.

OSHA and private sector experts will provide detailed safety and compliance information on cranes, powered industrial trucks (including forklifts), ladders, scaffolds and slings, said Ronald E. Morin, OSHA’s Springfield area director. A question and answer session will follow the presentations. Other speakers will include Marthe Kent, OSHA’s New England regional administrator, and Georgianna Parkin, state director of the Massachusetts Small Business Development Center.

Featured will be exhibits by OSHA; the Massachusetts Safety Consultation Program; the Safety Council of Western New England; United Rentals; American Safety Supply; Lynn Ladder; Massachusetts Electric; Massachusetts State Police; Keene State College; Springfield Steel Erectors; Westover Reserve Base; and I & I Sling Inc.

Morin noted that, while the primary audience is construction contractors, other area small businesses that use such equipment and can benefit from the information are encouraged to attend.

There is no charge for the forum. However, base security requires that all attendees register in advance and present photo ID for admission.

To register, call the Safety Council of Western New England at 413/783-1632 or fax registration to 413/783-0136.
