In 1960, Pantaleo Electric Inc. of Freehold, NJ, opened its doors as an electrical contractor and has since grown into a sizable heavy highway electrical construction contractor. This year, Pantaleo will celebrate its 40th anniversary.

While the business that Pantaleo is in is not unusual, the management of the company is somewhat rare — the company is completely female-owned and operated

“While the company was originally established by my husband, my daughter Marianne [company secretary and treasurer] and I became controlling officers of the company in 1988,” said Dolores Pantaleo, company president.

As a result, Pantaleo Electric is now a state-designated WBE (Women’s Business Establishment).

“Even though female-owned companies are still rare in this industry, the number is on the rise,” Pantaleo said. “It has in no way hindered our company. While there is often a proving period, the general contractors and vendors with which we work hire us because of our company’s outstanding track record not because of who owns the company.”

Working primarily as a subcontractor, Pantaleo has a number of large New Jersey jobs to its credit, including New Jersey Transit jobs, the turnpike sign job at the George Washington Bridge, off-site signal work for the Hopewell, NJ, Merrill Lynch building, the Atlantic City, NJ, tunnel signal project and the Montclair, CT, project.

Pantaleo is also an all union shop — working primarily with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW).

“Being associated with a union such as the IBEW allows us access to a large work force that is extremely well educated and up-to-date on code regulations,” Pantaleo explained. “This helps us guarantee top- notch work to our customers, and with our reputation on the line every day, this is extremely important to the success of our company.”

As the company has grown, more than 90 percent of its business has become heavy highway electrical construction, and as a result, so has its need to expand its equipment fleet.

In order to keep up with its increasingly demanding schedule, Pantaleo Electric purchased a Vermeer CC145 concrete cutter from Mount Holly, NJ-based Vermeer North Atlantic Sales & Service.

“With the increase in the number of our highway jobs, it made sense for us to expand our equipment fleet rather than just renting. This is the primary reason why we purchased the Vermeer concrete cutter,” Pantaleo said. “And we have been extremely happy with the performance of the machine.”

Kyler Foster, Vermeer North Atlantic sales representative, listed some of the benefits that Vermeer’s concrete cutter offers Pantaleo, “With tighter and tighter construction schedules, the CC145 offers an increased amount of horsepower, which in turn helps reduce time, labor and profit-cutting costs. The compact size of the machine — spanning slightly over one traffic lane — helps when they are working in congested areas as well as allows the operator to cut closer to guardrails and other obstacles.”

Vermeer North Atlantic Sales & Service is the exclusive distributor of Vermeer Manufacturing Co. equipment and services in Eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The company is headquartered in Mount Holly, NJ, with a branch in Highspire, PA, outside of Harrisburg, PA.
