On June 15, Patten Industries acquired Elburn Rental, turning its facilities into the newest Patten CAT location in Elburn, IL. The store will represent Patten’s turf solutions, compact construction and building construction product divisions.

In addition to Cat, the store will offer equipment from Hustler and Exmark and provide the rental of mixers, compressors, generators and telescoping material handlers.

“What the Elburn store does is expand the company’s offerings to the professional landscaping, lawn maintenance and trade industry contractors in the Kane County area with a wider range of products,” said Bill Dears, compact construction and turf solutions manager of Patten Industries.

The new Patten CAT store is located on 10 acres at 1001 S. Main St. near Route 47 just south of downtown Elburn and offers approximately 10,000 sq. ft. of shop, office, display space and showrooms.

“From Elburn, we will be able to dispatch field service work for anything within the Caterpillar product line,” said Crane Patten, president of Patten Industries. “We will also be able to work on the smaller Cat products –– the compact construction products and the BCP products like backhoe loaders –– in our current shops.”

With Crane’s son, Garrett, now involved in the business, Patten Industries is a fourth-generation family-owned business that was established in 1933 when B.C. Patten Sr. purchased W.B. Louer Co., the original Caterpillar dealer in Chicago. Patten supplied equipment to such landmark Chicago projects as the Midway Airport and Soldier Field and furnished equipment to the Armed Forces during World War II.

Over the years, Patten has expanded, outgrown and re-expanded its facilities, including the purchase of the Elmhurst Airport in 1960, giving birth to the Elmhurst location on the airport’s 27 acres, using its hangar as the initial used equipment facility.

The inception of the Elmhurst location and the new Elburn store are like deja vu for the company.

“When we first moved into Elmhurst it was wide-open ground out there,” said Crane Patten. “Now that’s all built up around there and our work is all coming out to the fringes. To be back out here where it’s all emerging again is just a real excitement for all of us.”

Patten Industries currently has seven locations –– the new Elburn facility, Elmhurst, Grayslake, Rockford, Ogelsby and Joliet, IL, and Hammond, IN. The company, serving as the exclusive Cat dealer for 17 northern Illinois counties and two in Indiana, is headquartered in Elmhurst.
