COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) Transportation officials say the cost of repaving about 60 mi. (96.5 km) of two South Carolina interstates will nearly double because workers will need to fully reconstruct the highway.
The state Department of Transportation is asking for public input on the new projects.
DOT officials say the condition of the pavement has gotten so bad, they cannot just repave the sections.
The DOT says the cost for repaving 23 mi. (37 km) of Interstate 26 in Orangeburg and Dorchester counties is increasing from $40 million to $75 million; the cost to rebuild 10 mi. (16 km) of Interstate 95 in Jasper County is increasing from $22.5 million to $46.5 million. The costs for a 29-mi. (46.6 km) segment of I-95 in Jasper and Hampton counties is going to cost $82 million, up from $52 million.
