Construction Equipment Guide

Applications are now being accepted for the Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) Summer Transportation Institute (STI). The program will run from June 12 to July 7, 2006.

The STI is a four-week summer camp from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily at Delaware State University (DSU). Sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration, DelDOT and DSU, the program is geared toward exposing 9th and 11th graders to the many career options in transportation in the areas of computer science, engineering and math and science-related careers.

Students will have the opportunity to get hands-on experience on a project from planning to pre-construction based on real-life problems that they manage themselves. All modes of transportation: land, air, sea and rail will be studied in the project.

Each week students will be given a task to complete, and enough information to complete the assignment, which will be monitored by engineers from DelDOT’s Planning Division and Division of Transportation Solutions and their Federal Highways counterparts. Students also will take field trips to reinforce their basic knowledge.

Only the first 20 students who meet the criteria of having a 2.5 grade point average and competitive SAT scores will be accepted into the program.

The program is fully funded by the Federal Highway Administration and DelDOT. Transportation to the STI will be provided by DART and will make stops at several points north, south and central to transport students to DSU’s campus.

For more information, call STI at 302/857-7690 or call DelDOT at 302/760-2080.
