The 6000 block of Market Street in Philadelphia, PA, has been reopened to automobile traffic due to the completion of a phase of the SEPTA Market Street Elevated Reconstruction (MSE) Project.

As the street reopens automobile drivers will notice a revised traffic pattern with one lane open for traffic (the outer lanes) in each direction on Market Street. Limited parking is available in a designated parking area in the center of Market Street. Safe and designated pedestrian crossings are also available at the traffic lights at 60th and 61st Streets.

Curbside parking is not allowed and illegally parked cars will be towed. In addition, drivers will not be able to make left turns from Market Street onto 60th Street. Also, no left turns will be permitted from westbound Market Street onto southbound 61st Street.

In addition, due to continuing MSE construction the intersection of 52nd & Market Streets and the 5200 block of Market Street will be closed to all automobile traffic. SEPTA bus Route 52 will also be operated over a local detour.

Work in the area of 52nd Street is expected to last for up to three months. The construction project will replace sewer mains as preliminary work prior to the construction of foundations support for the new El.

Throughout the construction SEPTA bus Route 52 will be detoured northbound from 52nd Street to Walnut Street and then continue on Walnut Street to 53rd Street, operate on 53rd Street to Arch Street, and then use Arch Street back to 52nd Street and the regular route. Southbound the bus route will detour from 52nd Street to Arch Street, continue on Arch Street to 51st Street and then operate on 51st Street to Walnut Street and the regular route. Signs will be posted at the temporary bus stops along the detour routing.

SEPTA is rebuilding the El between 46th Street in West Philadelphia and Millbourne Station in Delaware County. Scheduled for completion in 2007, the project is a major overhaul and modernization of the El, including a streamlined, single-beam support structure, new customer-friendly stations and art inspired architectural features that will significantly improve the overall riding experience for SEPTA customers.
