Global construction and development firm Skanska announced on Sept. 2, 2026, that it was awarded a $57 million contract by the City of San Diego for the El Camino Real Half Mile to Via De La Valle project in Del Mar, Calif.

The project will expand the heavily traveled corridor in Del Mar by widening El Camino Real to four lanes and replace the aging San Dieguito River Bridge.

While upgrading the corridor to meet current safety standards, construction will relieve traffic bottlenecks, improve drainage infrastructure and reduce flooding risks while protecting the corridor from future erosion along the San Dieguito River.

Riverbank stabilization improvements will further strengthen the corridor's long-term resilience.

In addition to the new roadway, the project will introduce a range of multimodal upgrades.

Those include things such as separated bike lanes, new sidewalks, improved traffic signaling and an equestrian-friendly trail beneath the new bridge that connects to the planned Coast to Crest Trail.

Together, these upgrades will improve mobility and safety and create a more reliable connection between Del Mar, Solana Beach and surrounding communities.

“This project reflects our commitment to delivering resilient infrastructure that strengthens the communities in which we live and work,” said James Bailey, executive vice president of Skanska USA Civil's West Coast operations.

“The replacement of the 84-year-old San Dieguito River Bridge and upgrading the drainage and flood protection will improve safety and traffic flow while strengthening the corridor's long-term resilience to flooding and waterway erosion.”

Work is slated to begin in December 2026.

The project is expected to reach completion in August 2030.
