HAMILTON, AL (AP) One section of Corridor X – an interstate stretch from the Mississippi line to Jasper, AL – could open in spring of 2005, highway officials said at a conference.

The next section, into Graysville, AL, could be open by fall of 2006. These target dates were released recently at a meeting of the Corridor X Task Force in Hamilton.

The meeting drew about 50 area leaders, as well as state transportation officials from Alabama and Mississippi and regional planners from the Memphis, TN, area.

Steve Ostaseski of the Regional Planning Commission of Greater Birmingham, AL, discussed the target dates for completion on the roadway, which will be known as Interstate 22.

Ostaseski said the connection into Birmingham is not expected until fall 2008, depending on funding.

Mississippi transportation officials said during the meeting that it could take three more years to get their portion of the highway up to interstate standard.

Carter Gray, administrator for the Planning and Development Department of Regional Services in Memphis, said it could be seven or eight years before officials are able to come up with plans, funding and construction to complete any connection between Corridor X and the interstate system in Memphis.

Different plans have been examined, he said, and the Memphis route may be selected by next spring.

The task force will meet again in January.
