Texas Oncology announces details on what will be the largest comprehensive cancer care center in San Antonio, currently under construction at Huebner Road and Research Drive. Texas Oncology's new 40,000 sq. ft. (3,716 sq m) center will include leading-edge imaging and radiation treatment technology as well as advanced medical and surgical oncology services. It is designed to provide complete outpatient cancer treatment services for patients in the San Antonio area.

“Texas Oncology's community-based approach to cancer care delivers advanced, high quality treatment close to the support that our patients need from family and friends — and without requiring disruptive and costly travel. The new center is an important advancement and expansion in cancer care in San Antonio,” said Dr. Thomas Fisher, regional medical director, Texas Oncology, San Antonio.

The center will feature advanced radiation capabilities, including the Varian TrueBeam high-dose linear accelerator, which includes onboard CT and fluoroscopy imaging for highly precise treatments. The TrueBeam also delivers treatments more quickly, potentially treating some tumors in two minutes, and with fewer treatment sessions. Other precision therapies to be offered are Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT), Gamma Knife and Cyber Knife.

The new center also will provide innovative medical oncology, gynecologic oncology, anticoagulation procedures and other specialized care, with seven procedure rooms, eight lab work rooms, 52 chemotherapy chairs and more than 30 exam rooms. In addition to the latest cancer care technology, the center will include a full range of supportive services including a pharmacy, onsite lab, mobile PET/CT and ultrasound imaging capabilities and an outdoor healing garden.

The center will have capacity to treat approximately 300 patients per day when it opens in 2017 with a staff of 19 physicians, and a supporting team of nurses, technicians, and administrators.

“Texas Oncology is committed to serving the San Antonio area with experienced, compassionate physicians and support teams, together with the advanced technology and facilities that our patients deserve,” said Dr. Steven Paulson, CEO and chairman, Texas Oncology. “Our patients also benefit from the cumulative expertise of the more than 420 physicians in our practice statewide.”

The new center will replace the current Texas Oncology location at 4411 Medical Drive, and is a significant expansion, one and half times the size of the existing facility. Across the San Antonio area, Texas Oncology's 33 physicians treat approximately 30,000 patients per year at 16 locations, including seven in San Antonio, and sites in New Braunfels, Floresville, Hondo, Boerne, Kerrville, Fredericksburg, Pleasanton, Seguin and Uvalde.

In addition, Texas Oncology is a leader in community-based cancer research, with approximately 300 patients in the San Antonio area currently enrolled in clinical trials.
