Now that the FY2013 IDOT Supplemental Appropriations bill has been signed into law, Transportation for Illinois Coalition (TFIC) members have turned their attention to a critical goal — securing a new State Capital Program.

Gov. Pat Quinn’s 2009 Jobs Now plan provided record level of road funding during the initial years. However, this program was front-loaded with highway projects paid for by one-time infusions of federal cash and bond proceeds. With Quinn’s Jobs Now program due to expire in FY2014, TFIC is working on a multi-year program funded by sustainable revenue sources.

To help achieve this goal, the TFIC Public Outreach Committee is holding a series of community meetings throughout Illinois. The purpose of these community meetings is to generate public and policymaking awareness of the need for and impact of transportation investment in Illinois and to get buy-in for new state and federal revenues from local officials, community leaders and key opinion leaders in communities throughout the state by allowing them the opportunity to talk about their infrastructure needs and their investment successes.

On Feb. 8, a TFIC Transportation Roundtable was held at Celebrations 150 in Utica, Ill. The meeting was hosted by AGCI member Brad Bruins (Advanced Asphalt) and Dan Aussem, Illinois Valley Contractors Association/Illinois Labor Management Council.

The attendees heard an overview of the current status of transportation funding from TFIC Managing Director Jennifer Morrison as well as remarks from Rep. Frank Mautino (D-76, Spring Valley) and Sen. Pam Rezin (R-38, Peru). Attendees were also able to pose questions about and discuss infrastructure issues of concern.
