Transportation Board Awards Nearly $13M in Contracts

The N.C. Board of Transportation awarded contracts totaling nearly $13 million for highway improvement projects in 13 counties at its monthly meeting in Raleigh on Jan. 8.

The contracts are for projects in Ashe, Buncombe, Caldwell, Cherokee, Macon, Madison, New Hanover, Randolph, Rutherford, Surry, Union, Wake and Warren counties.

Included is a contract to upgrade the northwestern and eastern sections of Wilmington’s computerized traffic signal system in New Hanover County. The $1.5 million contract was awarded to Traffic Control Devices Inc. of Altamonte Springs, Fla. Work is scheduled to begin as early as April 1, with final completion set for Jan. 1, 2011.

The board also awarded contracts for the following bridge work:

• Replace an existing bridge over Lower Bartons Creek on Mount Vernon Church Road (S.R. 1844) in Wake County. The $850,199 contract was awarded to C.C. Mangum Company LLC of Raleigh. Work is scheduled to begin as early as March 15, with final completion set for Dec. 31;

• Replace an existing bridge over Smith Creek on Russell Union Road (S.R. 1206) in Warren County. The $626,981 contract was awarded to S.T. Wooten Corp. of Wilson. Work is scheduled to begin between Feb. 2 and May 1, with final completion set for 150 days after the start date;

• Clean and paint 11 bridges in Randolph County, including 10 over U.S. 220 north and south of Asheboro. The $1.2 million contract was awarded to V.H.P. Enterprises Inc. of Tarpon Springs, Fla. Work is scheduled to begin between May 1 and June 30, with final completion set for 120 days after the start date;

• Build a new bridge over West Fork Twelve Mile Creek on Cuthbertson Road (S.R. 1321) in Union County. The $929,852 contract was awarded to Dane Construction Inc. of Mooresville. Work is scheduled to begin between March 15 and May 1, with final completion set for 195 days after the start date;

• Replace an existing bridge over John’s River on Playmore Beach Road (S.R. 1328) near Adako in Caldwell County. The $1.1 million contract was awarded to Smith-Rowe Inc. of Mount Airy. Work is scheduled to begin as early as Feb. 2, with final completion set for Dec. 31;

• Replace an existing bridge over the north fork of the New River on Sutherland Road (S.R. 1118) near Sutherlands in Ashe County. The $1.1 million contract was awarded to James R. Vannoy & Sons Construction Company Inc. of Jefferson. Work is scheduled to begin as early as Feb. 2, with final completion set for June 15, 2010;

• Replace an existing bridge over Big Horse Creek on Big Horse Creek Road (S.R. 1362) near Tuckerdale in Ashe County. The $914,844 contract was awarded to James R. Vannoy & Sons Construction. Work is scheduled to begin as early as Feb. 2, with final completion set for June 15, 2010;

• Replace an existing bridge over Paul’s Creek on Miller Road (S.R. 1625) northwest of Mount Airy in Surry County. The $678,044 contract was awarded to Smith-Rowe. Work is scheduled to begin between Feb. 2 and May 15, with final completion set for 150 days after the start date;

• Replace an existing bridge over Reems Creek on Herron Cove Road (S.R. 2098) near Weaverville in Buncombe County. The $642,799 contract was awarded to R.E. Burns & Sons Company Inc. of Statesville. Work is scheduled to begin between March 1 and June 15, with final completion set for 135 days after the start date;

• Replace an existing bridge over the Ivy River on Gabriel Creek Road (S.R. 1565) near Mars Hill in Madison County. The $1.1 million contract was awarded to Taylor & Murphy Construction Company Inc. of Asheville. Work is scheduled to begin as early as Feb. 2, with final completion set for Dec. 31, 2010;

• Replace an existing bridge over First Broad River on Jones Town Road (S.R. 1733) in Rutherford County. The $788,271 contract was awarded to Dane Construction. Work is scheduled to begin as early as March 15, with final completion set for Dec. 31;

• Replace an existing bridge over Junaluska Creek on Junaluska Road (S.R. 1505) near Andrews in Cherokee County. The $576,217 contract was awarded to Colwell Construction Co. of Blairsville, Ga. Work is scheduled to begin as early as April 15, with final completion set for Nov. 1; and

• Replace an existing bridge over Rabbit Creek on Rabbit Creek Road (S.R. 1513) near Franklin in Macon County. The $972,466 contract was awarded to Saddlebrook Construction Inc. of Pickens, S.C. Work is scheduled to begin between March 15 and May 15, with final completion set for 160 days after the start date.

In addition, the board moved to notify the N.C. General Assembly that it plans to amend the State Transportation Improvement Program to include a list of ready to go economic stimulus plan projects. The economic recovery plan will require congressional and presidential approval, and the proposed projects would be subject to federal guidelines and criteria.
