The National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA) has announced that Tilcon New York Inc. and Tilcon Delaware Inc. were winners of its 2002 Community Involvement Awards. The presentations were made at a special ceremony at the association’s 48th annual convention in San Diego, CA.

NAPA presents its Community Involvement Award to hot mix asphalt (HMA) companies that serve their communities through outstanding programs and projects.

Tilcon New York

Tilcon New York’s Oxford, NJ, community program has three components.

First is its commitment to education. It has contributed a $1,000 scholarship to a graduating high school senior. In addition, it gives to groups of children and adults to help them learn more about how the industry contributes to the community.

The facility helps sponsor and participates in community events such as the annual Warren County Heritage Festival. Tours of the quarry and asphalt plants have become one of the most popular events at this festival.

Donations are the third component of the company’s community involvement that includes:

• 225 tons of stone for the Waterloo Foundation for the Arts;

• quarry dust for an agricultural fair;

• monument-size boulders for a special project;

• money contributions for sports programs, local fire department; and

• special donation to buy equipment to assist a special needs student in the local school district.

Tilcon Delaware Inc.

Tilcon Delaware’s community service project helped to build the new First State BMX Track in Milford, DE, paving the corners with hot mix asphalt (HMA). The track won very favorable reviews from racers and was one of only 26 locations throughout the country to host an American Bicycle Association national event.

The company also provided “Rockman” to elementary schools in the area. “Rockman” is an educational program for children in kindergarten through fifth grade. It highlights the stone, sand and gravel industry while enhancing the classroom study of rocks and soils.

The program also promotes positive social skills such as safety, attitude and teamwork.

In addition, Tilcon Delaware employees have contributed their time to present the free program to the schools.
