Three Georgia contractors have been honored by the National Utility Contractors Association for their service to the community.

While the work may have been completed in the blink of an eye, the impact Brent Scarbrough Company Inc. made on one family’s lives will last a lifetime.

As part of a project featured on ABC’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” the crew demolished the Harper family’s old house in just two minutes and 53 seconds.

The Lake City, GA, home had severe sewage drainage problems and was causing health problems.

The company stayed on site all week from Jan. 16 to 23, 2005, to help clear a new sewage easement, install 400 ft. of sewer line, excavate the basement and backfill the walls and foundation with stone. Once all of that was done, an average of eight employees stayed on the site 24-hours a day until the new home was completed, helping to finish the sewer connection and grade the lot.

“The outpouring of support from the community was overwhelming. Everyone [who helped] was glad to be a part of the project, no matter how big or small that part may have been,” said Scarbrough Safety Director Frank James.

Scarbrough was honored with a National Community Service Award in the 51 to 250 employee category.

QRC Inc.

In the 11 to 50 employee category, QRC Inc. of Lutz, FL, won the Community Service Award for its domestic and sexual violence series — a collection of original oil paintings depicting the emotional phases a women endures while in and coming out of an abusive relationship.

QRC chose the project because of the personal commitment of CEO Keith Watson and his wife, Melody, a survivor of eight years of abuse in her first marriage and the artist who created the paintings.

In 2005, at no cost, QRC distributed 5,000 educational workbooks and 6,000 posters; hosted 18 exhibits; trained three police departments; participated in two batterers intervention programs; answered hundreds of inquiries from victims and survivors; and donated art prints to help raise funds for abuse organizations.

“Domestic violence doesn’t stay home when its victims go to work,” Watson said. “It can and most often does follow them, resulting in violence in the workplace. It is crucial that domestic abuse be seen as a serious, recognizable and preventable problem like thousands of other workplace health and safety issues that affect a business and its bottom line.”

Archer Western

In the 251-plus employee category, Archer Western Contractors Ltd. of Atlanta won the honor for the second year in a row.

The company again made a significant contribution to Rebuilding Together-Atlanta (RTA), an organization that helps low-income and elderly homeowners with home rehabilitation.

In addition to providing monetary support with some of the proceeds of its Third Annual Charity Golf Tournament, the Archer Western team showed up at the northwest Atlanta home of multiple sclerosis victim Roy Woodall before, during and after RTA’s National Rebuilding Day (April 30, 2005) to perform extensive interior and exterior repairs, landscape the yard and install the new air conditioner and washer/dryer donated by the company.

“The region has been good to us; I strongly believe that a company should give back to the community that supports it,” said Vice President Don Gillis. “AW employees are grateful to be employed by a company that cares about people and communities and believes in leaving a legacy of hope.”
