Vogele Paver Proves ’Formula’ of Success on Superpave Job

When the time came for H.B. Wiltse Excavating of Poughkeepsie, NY, to undertake the first “Superpave” job for New York’s Dutchess County, there was only one machine that would do — a Vogele 2210 W 10 paver manufactured by the Wirtgen Group. There also was only one place to get it — Formula Equipment Inc.

This was not the first time Wiltse has done business with Formula Equipment.

“It was our past experience with the company that brought us back,” said Ray Franks, superintendent of Wiltse. “They carried the brand of paver we were interested in and they are the area’s representative for the Wirtgen Group, which operates out of Chambersville, PA.

“Formula was one of numerous pavers we tried out. We liked theirs so when Formula came up with the right numbers, we decided to buy it. While this was our first purchase, we have rented quite a bit of their equipment, including a Hamm 90 osillitory roller and a Wirtgen W2100 milling machine,” he said.

“Renting a paver, however, is not really an option,” said Franks. “It is such a high-maintenance item. Cost also would not dictate doing such a thing, especially since we are in the paving business. We traded in one of our three older models on this one.”

The paver was put to the test when Wiltse Excavating “Superpaved” a highway rehabilitation job for the Dutchess County Department of Public Works. The work site was All Angels Road, County Route 94 in the Town of Wappinger. Superpave is a federal job asphalt mix description.

“Many local and state governments have their own asphalt mix,” said Franks. “The special federal mix required for this job is used all over the country on high traffic roads. It needs to be put down at certain temperatures at certain rates and compacted in certain ways. It is a very delicate procedure.

“To ensure that everything went well, representatives from Formula and the Wirtgen Group were present at the job site,” said Franks. “That is not common practice. It is a tribute to their customer service. They went above and beyond.”

Located in Rock Tavern, NY, Formula is a family business that prides itself in being earthmoving equipment specialists. The company buys and sells equipment on a local, national and international level and offers late model equipment for rent or purchase from a variety of manufacturers.

Its inventory includes:

• Excavators from 3,000 to 160,000-lb. class;

• Standard and low ground pressure dozers;

• Loaders with side dump buckets, forks and other attachments;

• Asphalt and soil compactors;
