Not long ago, White Brothers Inc., located in Westbrook, ME, was in a good news, bad news situation at a job in Sebago Lake Village.

The good news was that the government had eased surface mining regulations, which allowed White Brothers to excavate deeper in its gravel pits. The bad news was that the company's excavator could not handle the depth and the subsequent dredging operation when the digging went below the water table.

Many times in the past 13 years, White Brothers relied on National Attachments and Nye products to fill its equipment needs. This time was no different.

When White Brothers presented Scott Guimond, president of National Attachments, with the parameters of its excavation work, he had the solution.

Guimond recommended a Nye 17-ft. (5.2 m) extreme service stick extension equipped with a Nye HD static ditching bucket complete with a bolt-on edge and drain holes. It would provide the added reach that the company needed. It also would provide the flexibility to change from "long-reach" to standard excavator in less than four hours. In addition, the company can use the equipment on other types of projects, such as demolition.

"Bobby" Bellanceau, machine operator of White Brothers, is using the new Nye stick extension on a Komatsu PC300LC track excavator. He found the new unit easy to use. "It was easy to get adapted to. It took only a couple of days to get used to the new geometry. It works great," he said.

White Brothers' digging has progressed past the gravel layer, and it is now dredging sand.

With the Nye units, the company can operate this facility for several more years. Eventually the company will have excavated 700,000 cu. yds. (535,193 cu m) of materials. White Brothers is pleased with Nye equipment. Co-owners Mike and Tim White said it already has paid for itself within the first month of operation. The entire project has been an economic success.

Several years from now, when the dredging operation is completed, the water-filled quarry will become an ecologically-sound 19-acre, 30-ft. deep pond that will be stocked with fish. Water-front housing also will rim the banks.

White Brothers is loyal to National Attachments because of the expert advice and solid service it has received.
