The Tulsa division of Williams Construction Co. was the prime contractor for the replacement of the rotary railroad car dumper for the Northeast Station in Oologah, OK. Construction on the railroad project began in early August and was completed in November of 2000.
The rotary railroad car dumper is a machine that inverts a coal car weighing 240,000 lbs. (108,862 kg) so it can “dump” its cargo of coal on to a transfer conveyor for staging in the holding area. The new rotary dumper, provided by Heyl and Patterson Co. of PA, was delivered by nine semi-trailers and assembled on a concrete slab engineered specifically for the assembly. After the assembly was complete, the existing rotary dumper was removed from the building and the new dumper was lowered in through the roof. A 1,000-ton (900 t) crane from Phillips Crane of Houston was used for the extraction of the old dumper and installation of the new machine.
As prime contractor for AEP Public Service Company of Oklahoma, Williams Construction Co. offered technical expertise, scheduling, budgeting, cost control, and project coordination for the 295,000-lbs. (133,809 kg) rotary dumper.
