The California Transportation Commission (CTC) allocated $85 million for 53 transportation projects statewide, including $5 million in federal economic stimulus funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Recovery Act). The remaining $80 million in allocations came from assorted transportation accounts funded by state and federal dollars.

“My administration is working around the clock with the federal government to ensure Recovery dollars are pumped into California quickly and responsibly to stimulate our economy, create jobs and further invest in the future of our transportation infrastructure,” said Gov. Schwarzenegger.

California leads the nation with nearly $1.8 billion in Recovery Act funds committed to 478 highway and local street projects. Among the projects targeted for Recovery Act funds were a project that received $2.4 million to construct a bike path overcrossing above Highway 101 in the San Mateo County community of Belmont, and a project allocated $1.2 million to build a new bridge linking 7 mi. (11 km) of bike and pedestrian paths on the popular Lake Siskiyou Trail.

Other notable projects that received funding (not Recovery Act) allocations included:

• San Jose — $33.2 million to resurface 67 freeway ramps and 13 mi. (20.9 km) of Highway 101 in San Jose.

• Los Angeles — $1.8 million to help control graffiti blight on Interstate 5 in Los Angeles and Commerce.

• San Diego County — $636,000 for a project in La Mesa that will provide enhanced crosswalks, improve pedestrian access to the Civic Center and transit, and new streetlights.

• San Joaquin County — $5 million to replace an older median safety barrier on Highway 99 in Ripon with a new concrete barrier that meets current safety standards.

“We’re putting people to work building better roads, transit and bridges for California,” said Caltrans Director Randy Iwasaki. “At the same time, we are providing for a safe, efficient transportation system.”

In other actions, the CTC allocated $134 million to Caltrans, primarily to purchase land throughout the state needed for transportation projects.
