Construction Equipment Guide

The Charles Machine Works Inc. (CMW) has introduced its largest trencher to date: the Ditch Witch HT220.

Built to provide increased digging in both rock and dirt, the HT220 is a hydrostatic trencher with 220 hp (164 kW). Designed for large installations — 12 to 24 in. (30 to 61 cm) wide and 4 to 8 ft. (1.2 to 2.4 m) deep — the machine has a flywheel gearbox that delivers horsepower to the attachment on demand while protecting the hydraulic system and other components from shock. Operator vibration is further minimized by trencher stabilizers, standard on each machine, that isolate vibration when digging in rock.

Although the HT220 is not the compact machine typically produced at the Ditch Witch equipment factory in Perry, Okla., CMW Product Manager Brent Bolay said this machine typifies everything customers have come to expect from the Ditch Witch organization: quality, productivity and extreme durability.

“Working in harsh conditions demands equipment that is extraordinarily durable and sturdy, and the HT220 does not disappoint,” said Bolay. “From its rugged undercarriages to its reliable controls to its forged, heat-treated, high-alloy steel headshafts, everything on this machine is designed to endure the particularly rugged conditions of rock-laden job sites.”

“When you’re moving this much soil, you need to get it out of your way so you can install your product. This machine is designed with an integrated, reversible spoils conveyor which effectively deposits soils on either side of the trench,” said Bolay.

“This machine also has a patented bit block digging system which lets you easily change out one or all of your bits in the field without removing the digging chain.”
