When Port Murray Auto Salvage Inc. went looking for a powerful, compact new wheel loader, it turned to Harter Equipment to provide the solution.
Established in 1976, Port Murray Auto Salvage focuses on selling used car and truck parts to wholesale and retail outlets. Port Murray picks up used vehicles or has them delivered to their facility where they disassemble the vehicles and store the parts.
Its salvage yard, set back from the road in the northwestern New Jersey mountainside, is not your typical large junkyard. It is a small, well-organized lot with racks of car parts, pickup truck beds, car front-ends, transmissions and more. The yard also has rows of cars and pickups that are stored for parts.
“When you run an operation like this, you need to be well organized,” said owner Norman Vachon. “We’ve used wheel loaders to keep our yard organized since day one.”
Port Murray was ready for a new loader to keep their yard organized and business running — as its old loader was on its last leg. It contacted its Harter Equipment sales representative for information about Hyundai wheel loaders.
“I spoke to our Harter representative extensively about Hyundai wheel loaders and then visited their location to size-up the loader that would best fit our business,” said Vachon. “I also contacted a few salvage companies that are using Hyundai wheel loaders for the same application. They all gave positive reviews.”
Port Murray purchased the Hyundai HL730TM-9 (Tool Master) model with quick coupler, bucket and forks. The HL730TM-9 is a 22,500 lb. (1,020 kg) machine that is powered by a Cummins QSB4.5 4-cycle, turbocharged, air-cooled diesel engine boasting 123 hp (92 kW) at 2,100 rpm — and a maximum torque of 408 lb. ft. at 1,400 rpm.
“This machine has plenty of power for what we do and the self-stabilizing feature when lifting is outstanding,” said Vachon.
The HL7030TM-9 offers two hydraulic cylinders, one on each lift arm, that automatically adjust hydraulic pressure while lifting loads, providing a safe and stable lifting platform.
At 23.2 ft. (7 m) long, less than 8 ft. (2.4 m) wide and 10.5 ft. (3.2 m) high, the loader is the ideal size for Port Murray’s yard — especially with its 16.1 ft. (4.9 m) lift height.
“Lifting, moving and placing vehicles on our racks is a breeze with this machine and it’s the perfect size for our yard,” Vachon said. “We’re able to maneuver around our car lot, parts racks and even inside our garage work bay.”
The HL730TM-9 cab has increased visibility with large rounded front center glass. Another cab feature is the advanced 5.7-in. wide color monitor LCD screen, mounted on adjustable swivel-mounts to reduce glare and allow the operator to easily control the machine. The rear-view back-up camera is viewed from this screen. The comfortable and convenient interior offers many standard amenities such as automatic AC/heat, heated rear-view mirrors, hands-free phone, personal storage space and AM/FM radio/MP3 interface/USB ports.
“This machine is loaded with standard features,” said Vachon. “Out of all the great bells and whistles, I like the heated air-suspended seat. The seat provides a nice smooth ride that is easy on my back, making operating the loader very enjoyable.”
“Hyundai has come a long way,” continued Vachon. “I’m very impressed with this machine and feel you get more bang for the buck with Hyundai.”
