The Wilmington, DE, Chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) recently held its 10th Annual Block Kids Competition.

In cooperation with the Local Electrical Union No. 313, who allows the chapter to use their hall, NAWIC sponsors a free program for elementary children to learn about the construction industry. It is a program where the students use 100 building blocks, string, cardboard and foil to build something related to the construction industry.

Contestants have an hour to build and then they discuss their projects with the judges. The judges are local construction business people, owners and architects.

One child in each grade (K-6) was presented with a $10 prize; third place prize is $10; second place prize is $15; and first place prize is $25. All who participated received a hard hat, a blow pop, a coloring book and a sample construction drawing to take home. Ninety-six children attended this event from a variety of schools and districts.
