On Saturday, February 15th, the National Association of Women in Construction’s (NAWIC) Atlanta and Sugarloaf chapters, along with the Girl Scout Council of Northwest Georgia sponsored their Annual Block Kids Program at Camp Timberidge.

The Block-Kids Building Program is a national building program competition that is sponsored on the local level by NAWIC chapters and other organizations. The award-winning program introduces children to the construction industry in an effort to create an awareness of and to promote an interest in future careers in one of the many facets of the industry.

The program is open to all elementary school children in grades 1-6. The competition involves the construction of various structures with interlocking blocks and three of the following additional items: a small rock, string, foil and poster board.

This year there were more than 100 Brownies and Girl Scouts present to test their building skills. Prizes went to first, second and third place winners within the two groups.

The top winners for the Atlanta Chapter were Emily Lord, first place, who constructed a Hewlett Packard site; Samantha Woods, second place, who built an air base; and Sloane Kemp, third place, who made a space center.

Local winners advance to the Regional competition, and one semi-finalist from each region is entered in the National Program competition. National prizes are awarded to the top three projects.

Sponsors for this year’s event included All Crane Rental of Georgia Inc., CEFGA, Hardin Construction, J.A. Jones Construction, Knight Architects Inc., Rogers Construction Company, S&ME, Thomas Concrete of Georgia, NAWIC’s Atlanta and Sugarloaf chapters, and the Girl Scout Council of Northwest Georgia.

The Block Kids program exposes children to the thrills of building and introduces them to construction industry role models.
