The Oklahoma Department of Transportation released its Federal Fiscal Year 2027-2034 Eight-Year Construction Work Plan on Oct. 5, 2026, after the Oklahoma Transportation Commission approved it, okenergytoday.com reported.

The plan is ODOT's guide for addressing safety, pavement and bridge needs across the state's highway network. The state's eight field district engineers update the plan annually with input from stakeholders and approval by the Oklahoma Transportation Commission.

The latest plan details more than 1,200 critically needed highway and bridge projects across Oklahoma valued at more than $7.3 billion, okenergytoday.com reported.

Ongoing inflation and rising construction costs are limiting ODOT's ability to address infrastructure needs through the plan, as DOTs nationwide have experienced nearly 18 years' worth of inflation since 2020.

Additionally, growing demands on the highway system are outpacing traditional revenues. That will ultimately impact ODOT's ability to promptly invest in the state's highways and bridges in a timely manner, okenergytoday.com reported.

“Even as we recognize the many roads and bridges that need attention across our great state, inflationary pressure and fiscal constraints are limiting the department's ability to properly address the growing needs of our transportation system,” Secretary of Transportation and ODOT Executive Director Tim Gatz said. “Together these issues certainly support the on-going conversation about transportation funding. It is increasingly important that we continue to examine sustainable, reliable and scalable state and federal funding sources in order to maintain Oklahoma's transportation infrastructure.”

Highlights of the 2027–2034 Eight-Year CWP include:

• 596 mi. of rural two-lane highway improvements;

• 2,980 lane-mi. of pavement in fair or poor condition addressed;

• 188 at-risk bridges repaired or replaced;

• 10 structurally deficient bridges addressed; and

• 1,229 projects statewide, valued at more than $7.3 billion

Major projects included in the plan are the Interstate 40 bridges over the Arkansas River in Muskogee County; widening U.S. 259 between Broken Bow and Hochatown; Interstate 35 and State Highway 74 interchange modifications in Goldsby; I-40 interchange modifications in Elk City; shoulder widening on U.S. 64 west of Jet; widening I-35 between the Red River and Springer; further improvements at the interchange of I-35 and Interstate 240 in Oklahoma City and a new interchange at U.S. 75 and 106th Street North in Tulsa.

Also presented at the meeting was the updated four-year Asset Preservation Plan, okenergytoday.com reported. That plan complements the Eight-Year Construction Work Plan, with projects designed to extend the life of state highways and bridges via preventative maintenance and rehabilitation work.

The Fiscal Years 2027-2030 Plan includes 287 projects that invest $520 million into Oklahoma's transportation system, according to okenergytoday.com. Those projects will:

• improve 1,916 lane miles of pavement;

• address 29 accessibility needs;

• rehabilitate six structurally deficient bridges; and

• address 53 bridges at risk of becoming structurally deficient.
