The new Perkins Syncro 2.2 and 3.6 agricultural tractor engines bring all the benefits of the Perkins Syncro range – outstanding power density, robust reliability, tight packaging and exceptional performance – into the compact tractor market for the very first time.
At Agritechnica 2019 Perkins is building on its promise to develop outstanding solutions for agricultural customers with the launch of its second new compact engine — the Perkins Syncro 2.2 litre — designed exclusively for tractors.
While the Perkins Syncro 1.7, 2.2, 2.8 and 3.6 L industrial engines already meet the needs of a broad range of farm machinery, Perkins made a promise to expand its offering to include solutions specifically tailored for tractors at some of the market's key power nodes.
The new Perkins Syncro 2.2 tractor engine gives up to 55 kW (74 hp) and 270 Nm of torque, while the Perkins Syncro 3.6 tractor engine — unveiled at EIMA 2018 — delivers 100 kW (134 hp) and up to 530 Nm of torque. Both engines meet EU Stage V and U.S. EPA Tier IV Final emission standards and offer customers optimized torque curves for farming activities, excellent fuel consumption, easy service access and improvements in both noise and package size, according to the manufacturer.

"The development of the Perkins Syncro range is all about reaffirming our commitment to tractor and agricultural machinery manufacturers. These new tractor and industrial options ensure we have the right product offering to meet all our customers' agricultural needs."
With more than 85 years' experience in the agricultural sector, Perkins has a deep understanding of the critical requirements of its customers, so the new 2.2 and 3.6 models have been specifically engineered to provide reliable power for mid-range tractors.
"We've spent a considerable amount of time on both understanding what is important to farmers and tractor operators and on finding ways of working with equipment manufacturers to deliver on their key requirements," said Alex Eden, product marketing manager of Perkins Syncro.
"For example, for the 2.2 engine we know customers are particularly focused on having tight turning circles due to the limited space in an orchard or vineyard. Sight lines are also hugely important, so we've focused on how we package the engine, finding room for aftertreatment which doesn't impact sight lines and which allows operators to easily access and use tractor implements with accuracy.
"As the engine is part of the tractor structure, we've spent time understanding the twisting forces the machine will experience over uneven and often rugged terrain. We've also focused our attention on the growing demand around ground pressure, so tractor manufacturers and farmers choosing Perkins Syncro engines will benefit from products which deliver all the strength required to perform, but which are also light and compact, thereby easier to fit into the machine."
Powering the Future of Agriculture
With the addition of the 2.2 and 3.6 tractor engine platforms, Perkins 0.5 to 18 L engine range can meet agricultural original equipment manufacturers' (OEMs) machinery power needs, across the board.
At Agritechnica Perkins also showcased its 9.3 and 18.1 L range of engines that are suited to the wide range of agricultural applications found on the farm. The 1706J is a six cylinder 9.3 L unit that delivers a maximum power rating of 340 kW (456 hp). Recent advances include an updated common rail fuel system and simplified aftertreatment, while power has been increased by up to 18 percent, total engine weight reduced by 12 percent and fuel consumption on a typical machine cycle cut by five percent.
The 2806J is a turbocharged, air-to-air chargecooled, 18.1 L, six cylinder product capable of producing 470 kW (630 hp). To support customer demands around machine installation, Perkins offers a choice of engine configurations and options. The robust technology used on this product enables customers to integrate these engines into their equipment with the minimum of reengineering, according to the manufacturer.
