A sinkhole recently swallowed a piece of construction equipment in California.

The sinkhole appeared after heavy rains drenched the area north of Malibu, Calif., NBC Los Angeles reported. Crews were using construction equipment to clean up roads in the aftermath, when the sinkhole appeared and took the vehicle, the Ventura County Sheriff's Department said.

The equipment operator was safely rescued, NBC Los Angeles reported. The road will remain closed indefinitely.
