Skanska, a leading global construction and development firm, announced that it has been awarded a $271 million contract by NAVFAC Mid-Atlantic to construct a new homeport pier for four U.S. Coast Guard Offshore Patrol Cutters at Naval Station Newport in Newport, R.I.

The project will replace the existing Pier 1 with a modern facility designed to support the vessels and associated infrastructure at the active Navy installation.

“This project represents an important investment in the infrastructure needed to support the U.S. Coast Guard's growing fleet and operations at Naval Station Newport,” said Paul Pedini, senior vice president of Skanska's USA Civil New England operations. “We're proud to bring our maritime construction expertise to this project and deliver a new homeport pier with the systems needed to serve these vessels for years to come.”

The bid-build project includes the demolition of the existing 100-ft by 1,580-ft Pier 1 and construction of a new 80-ft by 1,000-ft pier capable of berthing four U.S. Coast Guard Offshore Patrol Cutters. The new pier will include critical infrastructure to support the vessels while docked, including new substations, water and wastewater connections and a compressed air system. The project also includes construction of approximately 290 ft of new bulkhead, site improvements, dredging and underground utilities.

The project is located adjacent to the $147 million NOAA OMAO Ship & Support Facility, another major maritime project currently being delivered by Skanska.

Beyond Naval Station Newport, Skanska brings extensive experience delivering complex maritime and federal infrastructure projects across the United States, including major facilities supporting critical transportation, defense and marine operations.

The project is slated to begin this month, with completion expected in March 2030.
